Guide for the rainy season
Monsoon Mould in Bangalore Homes
Mould is a fungus that grows on damp surfaces. In the Bangalore monsoon it shows up as black or green spots on bathroom grout, wall corners, the backs of wardrobes, and on shoes and leather bags. Clean small patches yourself, let the room dry out, and fix the source of the damp so it does not return.

Where to look and how to stay safe
Where mould hides in a flat
- Bathroom grout, and the corners where the ceiling meets the wall
- Behind wardrobes and beds that stand against outside walls
- Under the kitchen sink
- Window frames, sliding tracks and rubber seals
- Shoe racks, leather bags and belts
- The underside of a mattress on a solid base
Before you start
- Wear rubber gloves and a mask, and open the windows.
- Keep children and pets out of the room while you clean.
- Never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia or other cleaners.
- A patch bigger than about one square metre, or mould that keeps returning because of a leak, needs the leak repaired first, because cleaning alone will not stop it.
How to clean each surface
Bathroom tiles and grout
Scrub with detergent and warm water using a stiff brush. For black stains left in the grout, use a bleach-based tile cleaner diluted as the label says, then rinse well and dry the area.
Painted walls
Wipe gently with a cloth and mild detergent, without soaking the wall. If the paint stays stained once the wall is dry, it may need repainting after the damp is fixed (Facilities4u also does painting).
Wardrobes and cupboards
Empty them, wipe the inside with a cloth dampened in diluted vinegar or detergent, and leave the doors open until everything is dry. Move the wardrobe a few centimetres away from the wall so air can pass behind it.
Shoes, bags and belts
Brush off loose spots outdoors, wipe with a slightly damp cloth, and dry them in the shade. Do not use bleach on leather.
Mattresses and sofas
Vacuum them and let them air in the sun on a dry day. For deep stains, Facilities4u also cleans sofas and mattresses.
Window tracks and seals
Vacuum loose dirt from the tracks first, then scrub the seals with detergent and an old toothbrush, and dry them with a cloth.
Keep it from coming back
- Open the windows on dry days, and run the bathroom exhaust fan after every bath.
- Wipe bathroom walls and the shower area dry after use.
- Dry clothes outside or in a room with an open window, not in a closed bedroom.
- Keep moisture absorber packs in wardrobes during the rains.
- Get leaks and wall seepage repaired, or mould on the wet wall will keep coming back.
When to call us
Once the rains ease, a deep clean reaches the grout, corners and cupboards that are hard to do yourself. Bathroom deep cleaning starts at ₹499 per bathroom, and home deep cleaning starts at ₹2,500 for a 1 RK. We do not do waterproofing, so if the damp comes from a leak, get it repaired before the cleaning.

Common questions
Is it safe to sleep in a room with mould?
Mould can set off allergies and asthma in some people. Clean small patches, keep the room aired, and ask a doctor if anyone at home has breathing problems.
Does bleach kill mould on walls?
On tiles and grout, a diluted bleach cleaner removes the black stain. On painted walls and wood, bleach does not soak in well, so use detergent, dry the surface, and fix the damp.
When should I deep clean after the monsoon in Bangalore?
Once the heavy rain stops and the walls have dried, usually in November. Cleaning while the walls are still wet only gives the mould a fresh start.
